Welcome to the World of Bryony

Why are we changing our name?

Recently, it has been brought to our attention that we’re not alone in loving the name Poppy – there are other brands out there too! Because of this, and with the possibility of growing our ranges in the future, we’ve decided to rebrand under our new name – Bryony. As our designer, and the creator of Poppy and Fred, who better to share a name with?! We hope that with this name change, you’ll be able to imagine Bryony in our studio bringing life to an ever-expanding family of characters that exist in our stories and on our dresses.

Who is Bryony?

Bryony is our designer and the creator, each dress has to be hand illustrated and there is never a detail left out ! Growing up on a North Yorkshire farm, she is constantly inspired by the idyll of a countryside childhood, full of freedom to explore nearby woodlands, climb trees, talk to chickens and get up to general mischief when ever no adult was looking.

It’s the desire for childhood nostalgia, which feeds Bryony’s imagination as she illustrates each storybook and piece in our collection by hand from our studio in the heart of London.

Our History

When Bryony was a little girl – even younger than Poppy – her parents Stephanie and Michael started to make little girls dresses. Bryony took the company over 8 years ago after the original Poppy brand lay dormant – it was time to wake it up again, this time with a twist!

Bryony created carachters inspired by books from her own childhood and set about illustrating their adventures not only on our clothing but also in our accompanying storybooks. The little girl Bryony writes and drawes is a little girl who never grows up, and along with her faithful companion, Fred the dog; they go on adventures wherever Bryony wishes them to go.These stories are fundamental to our ranges and help us in our mission to create meaningful clothing for our wearers; pieces that last in the memory of mother and child for years to come.

Despite only starting with dresses for girls, Bryony made herself a few pieces to wear as she displayed the brand at shows throughout the UK. As more shows came and went, demand for the women’s dresses grew and grew from her fellow traders – after all why should the little ones have all the fun! Now the Bryony range caters for both women and children, so mothers and daughters can wear our designs all capturing the spirit of childhood adventures.

Our Story Books

Storytelling always puts a smile on our face and we want our customers, both big and small to become part of the magic themselves! This is why the dresses from our collections will always be accompanied by an illustrated book, each capturing the inspiration for our designs shown through the tales of Poppy and her friends. It’ll be a struggle not to become totally immersed in their world and even learn a thing or two along the way… By creating these unique designs, we believe our customers are not only investing in dresses, but memories which will last a lifetime, a rarity in a fashion world which seems to spin so fast. We want mother and daughter alike to love their Bryony dresses and most importantly have fun in them!

It’s not just our clothing, which brings Bryony’s stories to life. We also produce a whole host of gifts and homeware, often made of scrap fabrics from the collections so no material is wasted in our production.

What We Do Best

Made to wash and wash again, we pride ourselves in creating unique, hand illustrated pieces to be passed on to others, so our stories can continue for future generations. By making pieces built to endure, you can do anything you want in your Bryony dress, whether that be playing in the mud, climbing trees or dancing at a party, just like Poppy does in the stories. You won’t find another dress like it!

Our Ethics

We believe that in a world where fashion is produced faster and faster, it is vital for brands like us to invest in the future of our planet. This philosophy is central to all of our decisions and the team at Bryony work hard to ensure every element of our supply chain are founded upon ethical principles. This includes sourcing organic cotton so that the Earth’s bees are happy and free to buzz and pollinate without worry of nasty pesticides, and manufacturing our ranges in Europe so that we can visit our factories regularly to ensure that everyone working for us is happy and healthy. We’ve even managed to produce some of our collections in the UK – Poppy would be proud!

These values are integral to the Bryony story and we work hard to ensure that our customers don’t pay a premium for our desire to produce collections in a sustainable manner. We believe that Bryony should work in harmony with the world we live in, so that children like Poppy and dogs like Fred, may continue to play and explore a beautiful world for years to come.

The Future

Bryony’s studio team are always working hard to create a new adventure for our customers. We have lots of plans to expand our range so do keep a look out for new products!

Above all, we depend on feedback from our customers so we can continue to improve our designs, styles and sizes. We welcome thoughts for new products as well as ideas for where Poppy and Fred can go on their next day out and who they may meet along the way, so please contact us with any comments. We can’t wait to hear from you! – hello@bryonyandco.com

Bryony & her beautiful illustrated story dresses

Below is a condensed interview with Bryony for Culture Baby and what inspired her to make such wonderful unique dresses, and how it all began…

“I was looking at a lovely children’s story book one day and thinking how nice that would be if I could put the stories on dresses. This way girls would enjoy wearing their clothes more and would look forward to the next adventure. I loved the idea of putting illustrations on clothing. Shouldn’t every piece of clothing have a story behind it?”

Why Poppy England? “To me all of it is English. The experiences of Poppy and Fred are unique to England. With The London print, it was especially important to me to capture the scale of the city and the feeling of being so small in such a big place.”

Inspiration “I was raised in the north of England. I had an idilic childhood. I was brought up on a farm and was free to wander and play in the fields and the rivers near by. So my favourite things are the dramatic changes in the seasons and all the colours that come with that…the British countryside is particularly beautiful.  I also love that Britain has great diversity among its people, as well as our capacity for storytelling and our legendary British humour!”

Why each dress comes with a storybook “Always inspired by children’s books, I wanted to create a product that would mean more to the wearer than being “just another piece of clothing”. In combining a love of books and illustration with Poppy’s tradition of creating border prints, I am able to literally tell a story with on a Poppy dress. Now when you buy a dress from Poppy a storybook comes with it so you can not only read the story but wear it too!”

Beautiful borders!

Each dress we make contains a different exciting adventure in the world of Poppy and Fred. Bryony hand illustrates each print lovingly with so much care to detail. All our designs are hand drawn in London and printed on 100% cotton! Its not everyday you get to be a colourful walking story book…

Last week was Budgies, but this week I have fallen head over heels in love with my orchard dress in beatrice cap, I couldn’t resist adding a little bit of extra Poppy fluff underneath! After all it is Thursday…

Boats and Floats! Summer Season is Here!

We are now in June, and although here in England we are not known for the most ideal weather, for us it marks the beginning of the Great British Summer! I can’t wait to spend some quality time on the beach and along the beautiful Kentish coast in a Poppy dress(…or ten!)Its time to crack out the suncream, dig out those sunglasses and Pop on a Poppy dress and go on an adventure of your own!

One of our many beautiful collections labelled boats and floats, is all about Poppy and her dog Fred’s sea adventure. It also makes the perfect Poppy dress for my own seaside adventures when I wear my Joan dress around my costal home town of Whitstable. Whenever I wear my Poppy dress around Whitstable (and especially through the harbour!) I will receive such lovely compliments, because the dress is so unique and different from the usual summer styles you see. I always make sure to tell everyone the story behind each dress I am wearing so they can understand why I really do feel so special in what I wear, the fact each dress tells a story and has been lovingly hand illustrated by Bryony.

This particular print Poppy dress is one of my summer classics, and is so easy to whizz on and off for a quick dip in the sea! All our Poppy dresses are 100% cotton and perfect for popping in the washing machine when I accidentally juggle an ice-cream! I love how my Joan dress can also be dressed up after a day on the beach for an evening of Pinot in the local seaside Pub!

If you have any pictures or you in one of our boats and floats dresses, us Poppy girls would love to see! Or even your favourite summer Poppy dress… https://www.facebook.com/groups/1574959119391312/

Made in England!

This week we are focusing on England! Here at Poppy we make some of our beautiful dresses in the United Kingdom from a small factory in Anglesey. Our Sweetie Shop dress was one of the first dresses to be made here in this fabulous country! All our prints are beautifully and delicately designed by Bryony, who hand illustrates each Poppy and Fred story here in London, then a few selected dresses get printed and made here in the UK. All our dresses are made from 100% cotton, are fully lined and the ladies dresses have nifty pockets in the side seams. Whenever we can, we think it’s important to support people and other small businesses within the UK. The quality of the cotton and the prints are fabulous…what do you think?

Ellie & why her Pink Budgies dress is the top wardrobe pick!

Hello! My name is Ellie, and I’m lucky enough to be a newly appointed Poppy girl! I have been a long term avid Poppy frock lover – right from their very first seaside themed women’s collection.

This pink budgie dress is my ultimate favourite at the moment, and I want to wear it all the time, even when its in the washing machine.

I have concocted a top ten list of Why I Love My Budgie Dress!

No1. Its super comfortable and soft to wear, its 100% cotton and fully lined. It is even machine washable so I’m not scared of putting it on a 40 degree wash at the end of a busy day!

no2. The Beatrice cap style is easy to wear and has a flattering fit, its comes with a matching belt so can be nipped in at the waist or worn slightly looser after a big lunch! (quite often the case) I can still move and lift and dance and stretch in these dresses – they don’t restrict my day to day activities in anyway which is so important, I’m not the kind of girl not to get stuck into the job at hand! All beatrice styled dresses can be easily found on this link.

no3. It gives me beautiful vintage style – I will always be a vintage lover and 50’s fanatic and these dresses tick the boxes beautifully. When teamed with a Poppy petticoat, it really accentuates the wonderful full skirt the dress has and brings out that 1950s style even more.

no.4 It is full of colour! Its a beautifully bold dress, and I get compliments on it wherever I go – I’m not scared to pop it with a mustard yellow Poppy cardigan and a Blue fluffy petticoat to match the budgie print on the dress! But for someone who likes to be a little more subtle then it can be worn simply and still have a beautiful look. Range of fluffy petticoats here, from bright and bold to simple and elegant.

no.5 The story behind each dress – each Poppy dress tells a story of Poppy and her best companion Fred her dog. Each dress has a hand illustrated print of their adventures together, and alongside each dress comes an illustrated story book with the full tale of their escapades. This for me makes Poppy stand out from other brands and makes it so special – knowing that my dress is unique and so carefully designed. Full brand info here!

no6. Rejoice! The dress has pockets in the side seams! Which is super handy (hehe) when I’m on the go and need somewhere to put my keys or oyster card…or even if my hands are just a little chilly.

no7. The unique print. I don’t see anyone else in London wearing dresses like these…especially not covered in multicoloured budgies! This dress is so unique and individual. They are a real expression of personality and it feels refreshing change to be a person of colourful clothing! There is too many monochrome dressed people these days. All the colour ways and different styles of dress in the budgie print can be checked out here.

no8. Special occasion? Sorted! I have even worn this dress to a friends wedding. It is a classy and fun look which is perfect to be dressed up, plus with a Poppy petticoat underneath I was queen of the dance floor! Have a peek at wedding inspiration here.

no9. Flatters my good bits, hides the wobbles. I don’t know anyone who is 100% happy with their body, and personally its my tummy and the top of my legs. These are subtly covered up in this dress but I still feel elegant and feminine with a beautiful figure and shape.

no10. It is a timeless dress. Poppy dresses are designed to last. They are all printed and made to fabulous quality in design, print and manufacturing. I hope to pass my special Budgie dress onto my little girl one day (or buy her the matching dress!)
